How do I stop buying stuff on Temu and Shein?

To stop buying on Temu and Shein, cut the triggers and add friction: turn off their push notifications, delete your saved cards, take the apps off your home screen, and wait 48 hours before any checkout. If willpower keeps losing, Hinder locks both apps through iOS Screen Time once your monthly shopping budget is spent.

One shopping budget can lock all of these at the same time.

Every way to stop, compared

Here's the honest scorecard. Effort is how much setup it takes. “How well it works” is how it holds up at 11pm when a $3 lamp is calling your name.

Stack them. Notifications off plus no saved card plus a budget lock covers the trigger, the checkout, and the moment you cave. Any one alone leaves a gap.

Why is it so hard to stop buying on Temu and Shein?

Because both apps are built like games, and games are built so you keep playing.

This isn't a vibe. In November 2024, the EU's consumer protection network formally notified Temu over practices it said may break consumer law, including fake discounts, pressure selling with false deadlines or claims of limited stock, and forced “wheel of fortune” games you had to play to get into the site. Temu users have also reported spin-to-win coupons that grow if you check out within a few minutes. That clock is the whole point. It wants you buying before your brain catches up.

Temu's homepage with lightning deals, limited-time prices and a bonus coupons badge on desktop, and a spin-to-win discount wheel on iPhone
Temu's site in October 2026. On a phone, a spin-the-wheel coupon game covers the page before you can browse.

Shein got the same treatment. In June 2025, the European consumer group BEUC filed a complaint over Shein's “dark patterns”, backed by 25 member groups in 21 countries. The list: countdown timers, pop-ups warning you'll lose a deal if you leave, infinite scroll, and a game called Puppy Keep where you earn points toward free items by scrolling and ordering, and lose rewards if you skip a day. BEUC also counted one phone getting 12 Shein notifications in a single day.

And it works. Apptopia data cited by eMarketer found the average Temu user spent about 18 minutes a day in the app in Q2 2023, nearly double the 10 minutes people spent on Amazon. Every one of those minutes is a chance to buy something.

So if you feel weak for falling for it, don't. You're one person against a team of engineers whose job is your next order. You need rules that don't depend on you being strong.

Should you turn off Temu and Shein notifications?

Yes, first, today. It's the cheapest win on this list.

Most Temu and Shein orders don't start with a need. They start with a ping. “Your coupon expires soon.” “Price drop on something in your cart.” Kill the ping and you kill a lot of the orders.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone, tap Notifications, find Temu, and switch off Allow Notifications.
  2. Do the same for Shein.
  3. Unsubscribe from their marketing emails and reply STOP to their texts. The deals they send are the same bait in a different inbox.

Does deleting your saved payment methods help?

Yes. Making yourself type a card number kills a lot of $8 impulse buys.

Go into each app's account settings and remove every saved card. Then check the sneaky ones: if Apple Pay or PayPal is linked, checkout is still one tap, so unlink those too. When the app asks to save your card next time, say no. It will ask every single time.

This is the same move we recommend in our guide to blocking Amazon on iPhone, and it works for the same reason. Friction gives the “wait, do I need this” thought time to show up.

Should you delete the apps or set Screen Time limits?

Either helps for a week or two. Neither holds up on its own.

Deleting the apps removes the icon you tap on autopilot. But temu.com and shein.com work fine in Safari, and the App Store has them back in ten seconds. If you go this route, also sign out on the website so getting back in takes real effort.

Screen Time App Limits (Settings, Screen Time, App Limits) can cap Temu and Shein at, say, 10 minutes a day. The catch: you set the passcode, and Ignore Limit is right there. It also measures time, not money. You can drop $60 on Shein in four minutes and never hit the limit. We get into this more in our roundup of apps that stop you from spending money.

Does a cooling-off rule actually work?

It does, because most Temu and Shein urges are gone in a day.

The rule: anything you want goes in the cart, and you can't buy it for 48 hours. No exceptions for “but the coupon expires.” The coupon is the trap. If you still want the thing in two days and it fits your budget, buy it and enjoy it. Most of the time you'll open the cart, wonder why you wanted a rhinestone phone stand, and close it.

The weakness is obvious. It runs on willpower, and those countdown timers are designed to beat willpower. That's why the last step exists.

How do you lock Temu and Shein when your budget is spent?

Hinder links to your bank and locks Temu and Shein through iOS Screen Time once your shopping budget runs out.

You connect your bank and cards through Plaid, then give shopping a monthly number. Say $100. Put Temu and Shein in that category, plus Amazon and TikTok if they're part of the problem. As your real purchases come in, Hinder tracks them against the budget. At 80% you get a push. At 100%, every app in the category locks and won't open.

Want stricter? Give Temu its own limit of $0. App-level limits take priority over the category, so Temu stays locked even while you still have room for a Target run.

Need to buy something real, like a replacement charger? There's a temporary unblock of about 5 minutes. A full unblock means raising your limit, which is a decision you make on purpose, not mid-scroll at midnight. If you're comparing tools, our breakdown of the best app to stop impulse buying puts Hinder next to CartPause, one sec, and Shop Locked.

How do you know it's working?

Watch the streak, not the willpower.

Hinder keeps a no-spend streak for each app, with an estimate of what you've saved. Seeing “12 days without Shein” does more for motivation than any amount of guilt. If TikTok is where the Temu habit actually starts, read how to stop impulse buying on TikTok Shop too, since a lot of these hauls begin in your For You feed.

Common questions

Can you block Temu on iPhone?

Yes. Screen Time can put a daily time limit on Temu, but you can tap Ignore Limit and keep going. Hinder uses the same iOS Screen Time system to lock Temu once your monthly shopping budget is spent, so the block is tied to money instead of minutes.

Why is Temu so addictive?

Because it plays like a game. In November 2024 EU consumer authorities flagged Temu for forced spin-the-wheel games, fake discounts, and pressure selling with false deadlines. Add a coupon that grows if you buy within minutes and constant push alerts, and the app keeps pulling you back.

Why do I keep buying things on Shein?

Shein is designed for it. A June 2025 complaint from the European consumer group BEUC cited countdown timers, pop-ups warning you'll lose deals if you leave, infinite scroll, a points game you have to check daily, and one phone getting 12 Shein notifications in a single day.

Does deleting the Temu and Shein apps work?

For a few days. Both sites work in Safari, and reinstalling takes seconds. Deleting helps most when you also remove your saved cards and turn off their emails and texts, so nothing pings you to come back.

Can one app block Temu, Shein, and Amazon together?

Yes. In Hinder you put Temu, Shein, Amazon, and any other shopping apps in one category with one monthly budget. When your real spending crosses it, every app in that category locks at once. You get a heads-up at 80% first. Hinder is iPhone only.
